Checkbox list on web forms to not be limited to 4 answers

The way the forms work currently when selecting a multiple choice custom field is that if more than 4, it becomes a list you select from. This wouldn't be an issue if you could from this list just select one, however for some reason this then allows you to select various answers, which makes it really hard and fidgety (for no reason) for customers to fill out when at conferences or if through an online enquiry, etc.
I feel like multiple choice fields when on a form should give the option for you to add 'only one answer' to be selected or to be able to select multiple OR to add other as an option which they can then add a custom value to.
I hope this makes sense because it's driving me nuts 😂
