Contacts that do not belong to a target organization

One of my main sales strategies is we identify people who are connected to the contact at an organization that we ultimately we want to build a relationship with. What is considered best practice when your activity is focused on reaching out to an individual that does not work for the organization you are trying to ultimately win.
