switch of subscription payment method from monthly to yearly

It should be possible to change the subscription plan from monthly to yearly (and backwards). 

The support recommended to delete the monthly subscription (but then you lost all information like the start date or the amount of previous payments) or to use single payments. But this can not be an option.

Or do you have any other idea on how to deal with it?
