Linking Custom Fields in Deals

I've added several custom fields to our deals. I'd like them to work the same way the "Referred By" field works - so when we type in the name, it creates a link from the deal to that individual. Right now they're just Text Fields. Any way to do this?

    Hi Chris

You probably need to check the field type of the custom fields you have created. If the field type is "Person", it will link the name to the person in your contacts. A mere text field does nothing except stores text, naturally. So go to Company Settings - Data fields to check the type.

However, you are not able to change the field type after it has been created. If they have been created as text fields, you can't change it anymore. The only way is to create new fields. It takes a bit of manual work and bulk editing to transfer the existing information to the new fields (do not delete old fields before backing up the data - it really will be deleted from all old deals as well), but it probably is worth it.

    Hope this helps!

Are you able to see somewhere what deals have been linked to what people once you started implementing this?

I'd like to see and track who is sending the most referrals.

This you need to do with the deal list view. First open the deals in list view, set the referral field as a column (right hand side gearwheel icon). Then to see more specific data, you can use filters (e.g. deals won this year, or see what deals have a specific name in the field).
