Notify sender of @ mentions if the recipient does not have notifications enabled

Discovered the hard way that my colleagues did not have @ mentions enabled. There is no warning or notification about this, so I assumed they got the messages I sent. Not so.
So I propose to have a warning next to the persons name that you @ mention if they don't have notifications enabled, so that you are able to see visually that this might not get through like you expect.
