Incorporate Formula Field Functionality For Leads

We desperately need the formula field functionality for leads. We're in a high volume business that provides a large amount of quotes from people shopping around that does not result in a deal. We use these fields to calculate the estimated pricing for the service. We do not want to convert these to a deal, unfortunately in order to use the formula fields we have to.
It doesn't make sense that when you create a custom field it's for both leads and deals, but if you choose a formula field, it doesn't work as intended unless it's a deal.
