New: Grouping of Fields 🗂️

Hi @Rich Preston thank you for your feedback. Our developers informed me that the new grouping of fields replaces pinning fields as it existed until this update. You can, however, create a dedicated field group and place in it the fields that used to be marked as pinned.

This is the only Pipedrive update that is worse than the way things worked before.
It has broken our process flow and there is no work around.
Do you understand that we only have 2 options now?
- Show ALL 160 custom fields all at once
- Show only fields that contain data.
We need the ability to pin some of the 160 fields that don't yet contain data. The only way to show them so we can enter data is to reveal ALL 160 fields at the same time.

You can mark the fields that still need to be filled out as important.

That's true, but personally I would like the 'Always Visible' option. Important fields takes up a lot of screen real estate, and the field you want visible may not always be Important enough to have right at the top.
Pipedrive, why don't you survey your customers before you implement these changes? We would have told you what's important for grouped fields, and you could have avoided disappointing people. You could have directly asked the question: on a scale of 1 to 10 how important is Always Visible to you? and you would have known not to leave it out. Seems to be a lack of common sense being applied in the decision making around feature improvements.
Talk (and Listen) to your customers!!

Hi all!
I’m the Product Manager responsible for this feature (and the deprecation of the pinning feature). First and foremost, we acknowledge that we may not have effectively communicated the recent changes to you and our other customers, outlining what precisely has changed and how it impacts you. We also regret that we were unable to offer an automated solution to facilitate your transition to this new system. I assure you that we will improve on this communication and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Before the change, there were near-zero options for admins to organize the data on the detail view. If someone had 100+ fields in one pipeline, all of them were shown in one long list with only a filter to highlight a selection of them. If the salesperson had to find anything within that list they would still turn show all and go through the long list. When we planned the field grouping we understood that it would conflict with the pinning of fields. Field grouping will give each user the ability to collapse or fully show a field group to let them see the fields they need and hide irrelevant. Overriding that with company-level “always show” would create confusion. So, we did an ABC experiment back in July with 2% of the customer base to test out the deprecation of pinning and different solutions for that. We concluded that the pinning feature could be replaced by showing only filled fields. As always in life, there are always different opinions, but our understanding was that the filling would solve most customers. What I can add from the larger feedback in the last month and more that this has been out: the overwhelming majority of customers have expressed their genuine happiness with the change, but of course, there are ones whose current system of managing data is deeply interrupted.
A quick workaround would be to create a “Pinned” group and put all the pinned fields there, so it can be on top and always open. In addition, we have important and required field features to highlight if there is something worth mentioning or making mandatory. These solutions might not work in all situations but in most cases.
I understand that the customers have to go through the rather boring process of creating groups, ordering fields, renaming etc, but we did not find any reliable ways of making it possible automatically. That’s the pain that is real and we are sorry for that. I have had sessions with customers to go through the process and although it might be tedious, they have been satisfied with the result: a more structured data model. In general, we wholeheartedly believe that in the end, everyone can enjoy field groups because it gives the administrator the tools to structure the data in meaningful collections while also giving each user the ability to select which data is relevant for them and what to hide.

Pipedrive really needs to figure out how to maintain peoples specific sidebar organization and active modules when applying updates. I'm thankful that I am not managing this system for 10's or hundreds of people in an organization to see that when an updated is applied it changes everyones configuration.

Hi Hannes, thanks for this reply.
What I don't understand is why it's so difficult to have an 'Always visible' option for each field? A pinned group defeats the object of grouping fields in correctly named categories.
It would be useful to have the option to display a field even if it's empty without displaying all the empty fields in a group And even if it's not marked as important or required. Which for me at least, and I suspect many others, is a lot of my fields.
Please can you reinstate the Always visible option
Thanks.

This is one of the biggest and most welcome changes made to pipedrive. this should be a game changer for a lot of people. As a service company we want to have fields for critical data related to the different types of services we quote and now we can group them by the service type in deal details. Very welcome change. Thank you.
